As 2007 draws to a close, and my final looms ever closer (t minus 4 hours) I'd like to take the time to procrastinate and reflect upon what we've accomplished this year.
This fall we opened with a strong showing of rookie players. They managed to match or surpass the number of veteran players that showed for the first few practices. Both Reign and the Plenties doubled in size within about 2 weeks.
Late September we made our debut at the Hucktoberfest tournament in Whitewater, Wi. We ended the weekend with a 4 -3 record, topping teams such as Eau Claire, Beloit, and Michigan Tech. A respectable start, in my opinion. I also bought a fuzzy purple hat.
Early October (I believe the 5th and 6th?) we went to a small Duluth tournament and fielded two teams, X-Boyfriends and Yesus. Saturday morning in Duluth was both cold and windy, X beat Eden Prairie High School, and Y lost to Duluth in a blowout. X proceeded to play Bemidji while Y had a bye and generally just sat around or played hot box. X beat Bemidji 15 -3. Y then played Platteville, and X played St. Johns. We figured out that if we both lost, we could play each other, so naturally, we threw the games (we got beat).
The X vs Y game was extremely dysfunctional, but Y eventually topped X.
Sunday, everyone went home except for 15 of us, so we played savage with one sub running in between the two teams, and later we came together to form one team and beat platteville who we had previously lost to and put up a good fight against Duluth. I feel this was some of the best ultimate we had played all season.
Mid-October saw us in Northfield, again as a split squad. Y opened Saturday with games against CUT, Wisconsin and an open club. X played the other CUT team and a few others. We lost all of them. Sunday, Y won the only game of the tournament for either St. Thomas teams against Lawrence. The underclassmen really manifested their potential this tournament with Jason I'mnotafreshman making some good deep cuts for X, while Soccer stepped up and handled for Y.
Late October was Hollowinona, and truth be told, I don't remember very much of it, but I don't think we did well. We were dressed as construction workers and had our picture put in the newspaper.
----------------------------------------------
Looking forward, we plan on attending High Tide again this year as well as a handful of other spring tournaments. You can expect a fit, efficient, potentially winning, St. Thomas club in the spring series.
Happy now?
